Several eateries and hypermarkets have placed markers on the floor to remind customers of the need to maintain a separation of at least a metre from the next person in the queue as part of efforts to facilitate social distancing.
At a local burger shop here, the chairs are placed at a distance of arm’s length for those waiting to take away their food.
A representative of the outlet said they decided to do this the moment the movement control order (MCO) was announced.
“Since we are only offering take away, we have kept our tables at the back of the shop and just placed rows of chairs, but at arm’s length.
“We also have a hand sanitiser for everyone to use, ” she said.
Nara Lee, 18, who was there with her mother to take away burgers, said it was nice of the outlet to separate the chairs.
“I have not seen this anywhere else. Other eateries offering takeaway should consider doing this as it would make customers feel safer, ” said the student.
At a local supermarket, there are lines of tape on the floor to space each customer at least 1.2m apart as they queue to pay.
Branch manager Tan Cheng Suah said it was the first day they were implementing the move as part of social distancing.
“We make sure shoppers are apart. Our cashiers will tell them to stay behind the lines until it is their turn.”
