How does one react to this sort of thing?! A multi-platform tribute from Beyoncé is almost difficult to fully comprehend, even for literal royalty. It was hard to imagine anything other than Meghan seeing the post come up, on her flight back to London, and just sort of tossing her phone on the ground in a momentary, stunned flurry of emotion. Or maybe breaking out into some kind of exuberant, ecstatic dance in her seat.
Well, it appears her actual reaction—at least according to one friend—was a bit more contained. Her makeup artist and close friend, Daniel Martin (you may remember him as the one who Instagrammed an avocado toast snack during a lunch date with Meghan a few months ago), recently spoke to Gayle King, on CBS News, about Meghan and how she has been faring. Referencing the Beyoncé post, Martin shared, “I sent her a pic. I think it was a screen grab of the two of them in front of the portrait. I think all I wrote was, ‘Girl.’” He continued, “She wrote me back like the big eye emoji.”
Now, which emoji in particular he is referring to is slightly unclear. The Melange Free news presumes he means—in their words—“the flushed face emoji . . . a yellow face with raised eyebrows, wide eyes, and blushing cheeks.” (This has us jonesing for Daily Mail descriptions of every emoji.) However, we also wonder if perhaps he could have meant the emoji that’s just the two large eyes, enlarged to a comic degree.
This nugget of Meghan-related information only leaves us with more questions. Have she and Beyoncé communicated at all? Have they met?! Which emojis currently reside in Meghan’s “most used” section on her phone? And should there be some sort of official naming system in place for emojis so that we don’t run into this sort of “What one is it?!” confusion again?
